Micro-credentials have become the hottest trend in the L&D world, with digital badges and short certifications appearing on every CV. But are we potentially trading depth of knowledge for the speed of achievement?
The core promise of micro-credentials is agility. In a workforce that needs to upskill and reskill at unprecedented speeds, a three-year degree or a six-month intensive course often can't keep pace. Micro-credentials allow us to break down complex skills into bite-sized, verifiable blocks.
However, the danger lies in the "collection" mindset. Are learners actually mastering the competencies, or are they just racing to collect the badges? True expertise often requires synthesis, context, and time—things that a 20-minute micro-module might struggle to provide.
The solution isn't to abandon micro-credentials, but to ensure they are architected as part of a larger, coherent learning ecosystem. They should be the building blocks of depth, not just a substitute for it.
