Microlearning ROI Calculator

Work out what your organisation gets back when a 60-minute course becomes a 12-minute lesson.

Every hour a person spends in a course is an hour away from the job. Shorten the course without losing the learning and that time comes back. This is what it is worth.

How the figure is worked out

1

Hours released

Headcount, multiplied by courses per year, multiplied by the minutes each course loses when it drops from its current length to the microlearning target. A thousand people taking twelve courses a year, each cut from sixty minutes to twelve, releases 9,600 hours.

2

Value of those hours

The average salary divided by a 1,750-hour working year gives the cost of an hour. That year is 220 working days at eight hours, less holiday. At a £45,000 average an hour costs £25.71, and 9,600 of them is £247,000.

3

Capacity returned

The same hours divided by that working year read as people rather than money: 9,600 hours is 5.5 full-time equivalents handed back to the business, without hiring anyone.

What the number does and does not include

Time, not tuition

The calculation counts learner time only. It does not price the authoring effort microlearning also saves, the licence you were paying for a legacy tool, or the travel and room hire a classroom day carries. Those sit on top.

It assumes the learning still lands

Shorter only pays if people still know the thing afterwards. Single-objective lessons, active recall and spaced reinforcement are what make the shorter course hold, which is why they are built into QuikAuthor rather than left to the author.
